factors that contribute to anxiety disorders

Various genetic and environmental factors contribute to risk for anxiety disorders. These factors include being female, higher levels of shyness, and exposure to stressful life events in early childhood. Risk factors also include having close family relatives with anxiety disorders, health conditions, some medications, and life events such as a divorce. Importantly, multiple factors may interact with each other, complicating and heightening risk.
