Hi there. I’m Dr. Hunter Leckonby :)
Dr. Hunter Leckonby
Licensed clinical psychologist
Locations: Falls Church, McLean, Telehealth
As a psychologist, I believe healing happens when you feel deeply seen, genuinely understood, and safely supported. I am dedicated to providing affirming, personalized therapy for individuals navigating life with complexity, depth, and courage. My practice is intentionally inclusive and focused on serving those who may not feel fully seen in traditional therapy settings.
If you’ve ever felt like you're "too much," "not enough," or like therapy just hasn’t fit before—you're not alone. I work best with clients looking for a therapist who is real, thoughtful, and flexible in how we work together. My practice centers neurodivergent adults and teens (including those with ADHD and autism), LGBTQ+ individuals, and people in intercultural or interracial relationships. I also support professionals and students facing executive functioning challenges, burnout, and perfectionism.
I offer neuroaffirming, identity-affirming therapy grounded in the belief that your brain, your culture, and your story are not problems to be solved—they're part of your unique strengths. Together, we can explore what’s working, what’s not, and what healing and growth might look like for you.
You’re not broken—you’re carrying more than anyone can see. Relief and growth come from accepting your full self, not from changing it to fit expectations.
My work is shaped by both my clinical training and my personal journey. I earned my doctoral and master’s degrees from La Salle University, an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited institution, and as someone living with ADHD who has navigated various forms of anxiety and depression, I deeply understand how overwhelming and isolating it can feel to manage so much beneath the surface while trying to keep up on the outside.
I know what it’s like to feel drained, misunderstood, or like you're constantly trying to meet expectations that don’t match how your brain or emotions work. That personal understanding helps me connect with clients in a grounded, compassionate, and nonjudgmental way. To me, therapy should feel like a collaborative space—where you're not being “fixed,” but supported in uncovering what works for you.
Above all, I believe in compassion over shame, curiosity over judgment, and flexibility over forcing a path that doesn’t fit. Whether you're seeking clarity, relief, or meaningful change, I’d be honored to support you in your journey.
Philosophy
I approach therapy as a space where your full self is welcome—messy parts included. You don’t have to figure it all out alone. Therapy can be a place to slow down, get clear, and build tools that truly fit you. I’m not here to “correct” you. I’m here to help you understand yourself more deeply, reconnect with what matters, and develop tools that work for you, not against you.
My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and rooted in affirming care with a strengths-based perspective —whether that means helping you embrace your neurodivergent identity, build systems that actually work for your brain, explore gender or sexual identity in a safe space, or untangle patterns shaped by family, culture, or societal expectations.
I believe every person holds inherent worth and unique strengths. My role is to support you in uncovering your own resilience, discovering what works for your mind and heart, and creating a path toward greater well-being on your terms. Healing is not about “fixing” something broken but about embracing your whole self and nurturing growth that feels authentic and sustainable.
I integrate evidence-based strategies from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), mindfulness, and executive functioning coaching, woven with trauma-informed and culturally responsive care. Whether you’re struggling to get through the day or seeking to better understand yourself, therapy with me offers a space to reconnect with your values, your authentic voice, and your inherent capacity to grow and thrive.
Specialty Areas
Neurodivergence, ADHD, Autism Spectrum, & Twice-exceptional
I work with neurodivergent adults and teens—including those diagnosed later in life or who’ve learned to mask in order to get by. If you’ve ever felt like you’re navigating a world that wasn’t built with your brain in mind, you’re not alone. I’m here to support you in finding strategies and spaces that honor how you think and experience life, helping you thrive on your own terms.
Anxiety, Depression, Burnout & Executive Functioning
If you’re feeling weighed down by anxiety, depression, burnout, or struggles with focus, motivation, or follow-through, you’re not alone. These challenges can make even the simplest parts of daily life feel overwhelming. In our work together, we’ll build practical tools and deepen your self-understanding—so you can move through life with more clarity, ease, and a sense of balance that actually fits who you are.
Neuropsychological Assessment for ADHD, Autism, and Neurodivergence
I offer comprehensive psychological evaluations for individuals seeking clarity around ADHD, autism, and other forms of neurodivergence. Whether you're exploring a potential diagnosis for the first time, questioning an earlier label, or simply looking to better understand how your brain works, assessment can be a powerful tool for insight and self-validation. My approach is neuroaffirming, collaborative, and strengths-based—I don’t view assessments as a way to find what’s "wrong," but as a way to uncover how you process, relate, and experience the world. Together, we’ll use that understanding to guide next steps, support, and self-compassion.
LGBTQ+ Affirming Care
Whether you identify as LGBTQ+ or are in the process of exploring your identity, I offer affirming, inclusive support around gender, sexuality, relationships, and life transitions. Together, we’ll create a space where your identity is seen, respected, and celebrated—and where we can work through the impact of minority stress, internalized shame, and the ongoing process of self-acceptance with care and compassion.
Multicultural and Interracial Relationships
As the partner of a first-generation immigrant, I bring a personal understanding of the complexities surrounding immigration, including the emotional weight of visas, citizenship, and experiences of discrimination. I know how nuanced and layered cultural identity, communication, and family expectations can be within relationships. I support clients in exploring these dynamics with curiosity and compassion, working together to build deeper connection, mutual understanding, and healthy boundaries that honor both individual and shared experiences.
PTSD, Trauma & Trauma-Informed Care
Healing from trauma takes time, safety, and a therapist who meets you with compassion—not pressure. I provide trauma-informed care, including cognitive processing therapy (CPT) and prolonged exposure (PE), for individuals living with the effects of PTSD, complex trauma, and painful life experiences. Whether you're dealing with the aftermath of a single event or the slow accumulation of ongoing stress, therapy can help you reconnect with a sense of safety, agency, and self-trust.
Teens & Young Adults
Adolescence and early adulthood are times of growth, change, and big questions about who you are and who you want to become. I offer a warm, nonjudgmental space for teens and young adults to explore identity, gain independence, and navigate life’s challenges with greater confidence.

why I became a psychologist..
I have a genuine desire to help individuals overcome challenges, improve their mental well-being, and lead more fulfilling lives. Another part of my motivation to become a psychologist was to help promote cultural awareness, social justice, and inclusivity in mental health care. :)
